John Martyny, PhD, CIH
National Jewish Health, DENVER

…on the following topic:

“Cooking Meth With Kids in the House: The Dark Side of Chemistry”

To wrap things up, I want to thank everyone who had a hand in the King Corn event for all their support! I would also like to encourage anyone who might have considered taking an active role in the club but, for whatever reason, couldn’t find the time, to come on down and share your ideas!

Have a terrific break!

Hello Members!!

Just keeping y’all up to date with the Metro State Chem Club happenings. For Starters We will be doing a community/campus outreach event February Monday the 8th, 2010 from noon to 3 pm aprx. We will need volunteers for all types of things including designing advertisements, working on project material, presentation, and other oddball jobs. Anybody who is interested is encouraged to take the bull by the horns, and should attend club meeting to get a full grasp on the event.

Other news; We will be hosting the next meeting at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, which corresponds to Cafe Scientifique!! (Tuesday, 17 November, 2009) We will arrive an hour early to get good seats, and discuss club matters. The plan is to adjourn the meeting at the start Cafe Scientifique (6:30pm). The lecturer will be Mitch Begelman, Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, JILA Fellow, University of Colorado, Boulder, and he will be speaking on – Gravity’s Fatal Attraction: How Black Holes Rule the Universe – As the Universe evolves, could it be the ultimate fate of all matter to be “swallowed” by black holes? More info can be found at http://cafescicolorado.org/Begelman.htm which gives a brief of the topic, and bio of Mitch Begelman. This should be a fun event, and a great way for us to get together to continue the Metro State Chem Club.

Hey Folks,

Many of you have asked me to keep y’all posted on what has happened with the club, or spoken about at the meeting.

For starters there has been a change in officers due to larger amounts of motivation needed to get functions working. New officers can be found and contacted at http://www.mschemclub.org/contacts/

At the meeting we discussed doing a Public Service event of connecting Chemistry to everyday life. This will be done through a showing of King Corn at the Turnhall on campus located in the Tivoli. We are looking at doing this event the first week of February as there is some ground work that needs to be covered before then, which includes rental of hall, movie permissions, catering details. budget, presentation development, and a few other details.

We also spoke about bring back field trips that were once part of the club. Currently, we are finding out about a trip to NREL, and Tour of the Labs at the National Ice Core Laboratory if any of you missed it the first time. Ideas of visiting a lab developing synthetic polymers was discussed (and sound exciting), but we have yet to locate one in the Front Range that we could contact, any leads would be appreciated.

The next Chem Club meeting will be Thursday Oct 22nd at 4 PM in Room 312 of the Sci Bld (aka P chem Lab)

Anybody with comments or wishes to participate can reach any of the officers at http://www.mschemclub.org/contacts/
Thank you, & good day,

Hello everyone!
There will be a chemistry club meeting tomorrow at 1pm (Tuesday the
28th of April) whereat we will be discussing the Chem Day results as
well as performing a demonstration. The demonstration is the “Briggs-
Rauscher Reaction”, and consists of a solution which changes colors
from clear to amber and black several times for approximately five
minutes. This reaction occurs because of competing species of iodine
in solution, and there will be a handout available with details
regarding the reaction for your private inquisition. I apologize for
the extremely short notice as I appear to have somehow erred in sending
this sooner over the weekend. There will be food and drinks for anyone
who can make it, as well as a discussion regarding a finale for the end
of the semester.

Folks,
As you may or may not be aware, part of the Auraria Campus Master Plan includes the centralization of the three schools (Metro, CCD, CUD) into neighborhoods. Metro’s neighborhood is the parking lot next to the Tivoli (north of the old parking garage). The first building is in the design process and is expected to cost around $52 million, with approximately $10 million in back-fill renovation of vacated space. The first building is being designed as a “one stop shop” for student needs, housing nearly all student support services plus administration, the First Year Success program, classrooms, lounges (which will be designed with student input), etc.

Please visit the Metro State is Rising website at http://MetroStateRising.com for more information. There are links for the Fact Sheet and Neighborhood Master Plan on the right side of the screen.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: This first building will be payed for with an increase of student fees. This increase can only be passed by student vote. Please visit the website and vote in favor of the building. There is a very informative FAQ page, and it highlights the fact that even after the proposed fee increase, Metro is still the best deal in the state!

The SGA elections happen on April 13-17, and students will receive an email to their mscd.edu account asking for their vote on this issue. Please look for this email!

I’d be happy to answer any questions,
Dr. Ball
