Upcoming Chemistry Club Meeting
Hey there all you cool Chemistry Club cats and inquisitive visitors, hope everyone is pleased with their results and/or is working hard to finish their semester strong! To reward yourselves for all of your efforts you might consider attending the next Club Meeting i.e. Cafe Scientifique on Tuesday May 18th located at the Wynkoop Brewery, 1634 18th Street right off the 16th Street Mall. A few of us will arrive early (at about 6pm) to secure a table in the Mercantile Room. Before the lecture we will be discussing plans for Chemistry Club activities during the 2010-2011 school year, semester highlights, incredulous happenings and other things of interest which might contribute to the general jollity of the evening. The lecture, sure to be of interest to the “chemically inclined”, will be presented by:
John Martyny, PhD, CIH
National Jewish Health, DENVER
…on the following topic:
“Cooking Meth With Kids in the House: The Dark Side of Chemistry”
If you are interested in learning more follow this link:

To wrap things up, I want to thank everyone who had a hand in the King Corn event for all their support! I would also like to encourage anyone who might have considered taking an active role in the club but, for whatever reason, couldn’t find the time, to come on down and share your ideas!
Have a terrific break!

Club Meeting/Event Tuesday, 17 November, 2009
Hello Members!!
Just keeping y’all up to date with the Metro State Chem Club happenings. For Starters We will be doing a community/campus outreach event February Monday the 8th, 2010 from noon to 3 pm aprx. We will need volunteers for all types of things including designing advertisements, working on project material, presentation, and other oddball jobs. Anybody who is interested is encouraged to take the bull by the horns, and should attend club meeting to get a full grasp on the event.
Other news; We will be hosting the next meeting at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, which corresponds to Cafe Scientifique!! (Tuesday, 17 November, 2009) We will arrive an hour early to get good seats, and discuss club matters. The plan is to adjourn the meeting at the start Cafe Scientifique (6:30pm). The lecturer will be Mitch Begelman, Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences, JILA Fellow, University of Colorado, Boulder, and he will be speaking on – Gravity’s Fatal Attraction: How Black Holes Rule the Universe – As the Universe evolves, could it be the ultimate fate of all matter to be “swallowed” by black holes? More info can be found at http://cafescicolorado.org/Begelman.htm which gives a brief of the topic, and bio of Mitch Begelman. This should be a fun event, and a great way for us to get together to continue the Metro State Chem Club.

Hello everyone!
There will be a chemistry club meeting tomorrow at 1pm (Tuesday the
28th of April) whereat we will be discussing the Chem Day results as
well as performing a demonstration. The demonstration is the “Briggs-
Rauscher Reaction”, and consists of a solution which changes colors
from clear to amber and black several times for approximately five
minutes. This reaction occurs because of competing species of iodine
in solution, and there will be a handout available with details
regarding the reaction for your private inquisition. I apologize for
the extremely short notice as I appear to have somehow erred in sending
this sooner over the weekend. There will be food and drinks for anyone
who can make it, as well as a discussion regarding a finale for the end
of the semester.

Metro Students: An important vote is coming!
Folks,
As you may or may not be aware, part of the Auraria Campus Master Plan includes the centralization of the three schools (Metro, CCD, CUD) into neighborhoods. Metro’s neighborhood is the parking lot next to the Tivoli (north of the old parking garage). The first building is in the design process and is expected to cost around $52 million, with approximately $10 million in back-fill renovation of vacated space. The first building is being designed as a “one stop shop” for student needs, housing nearly all student support services plus administration, the First Year Success program, classrooms, lounges (which will be designed with student input), etc.
Please visit the Metro State is Rising website at http://MetroStateRising.com for more information. There are links for the Fact Sheet and Neighborhood Master Plan on the right side of the screen.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: This first building will be payed for with an increase of student fees. This increase can only be passed by student vote. Please visit the website and vote in favor of the building. There is a very informative FAQ page, and it highlights the fact that even after the proposed fee increase, Metro is still the best deal in the state!
The SGA elections happen on April 13-17, and students will receive an email to their mscd.edu account asking for their vote on this issue. Please look for this email!
I’d be happy to answer any questions,
Dr. Ball
Chem Day
Folks,
Chem Day is coming! It happens on April 18th. Registration of visiting contestants starts at 7:30 am, and contests start at 8 am. Lunch will be provided by the Chem Department for student volunteers, and there’s usually some breakfast stuff (donuts, etc.) in the Department office for the early birds.

March 6 (Thursday) is the next local ACS meeting at DU. The topic is the utilization of advanced spectroscopic methods in science education. The local section will be supporting student affiliate groups again this year with another COSAC conference, and they support student travel to conferences, as well. I encourage you all to attend these local meetings for several reasons: you’ll hear about current applications and news, get new ideas, get (or stay) excited about chemistry, meet potential employers, and be seen as a highly active student affiliate group. Not to mention, students get a good meal for $5.
I’ve attached the section newsletter, and I always post the current copy on the Club bulletin board outside SI323. RSVP’s are due by Feb 28.

Hello club,
From what I’ve gathered we will meet Tuesday morning @ 9:30 in the PChem lab (SI 312)
some of the agendas at this or a near-future meeting:
* Order books for ACS study guides
* Make a poster for New Orleans
* planning the election of new officers to replace anyone stepping down
* an awesome new T-shirt idea (thanks to Mary Kay!)
* revenue: selling T-shirts, books, etc.
* Feb 20 local section meeting at CSU (coal-to-liquids technology) –
Did anyone go to the Jan meeting at UNC?
* Chem Day, April 18.
* 2008BCCE (The ACS Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, Indiana
University, July 27-31)
* COSAC 2008? (I’ll make some inquiries prior to our meeting)
Club Meeting
The next meeting will be held at 11:00:00 am in the Science building computer lab.
Hi gals & guys,
Who:
This is a notice and reminder to all chem club members that last Friday we made a few decisions that have not yet been announced.
What:
Mostly regarding a trip to New Orleans for the National ACS meeting.
Where and when:
We are meeting Friday the 14th at 11:00 in SI 124C (MAC computer lab), which is reserved from 11am-12:15pm. We’ll probably be there longer as it seems there is a bit to do, and since nobody makes time during the semester we should try an get as much done before we go our separate ways during break.
Why (the goods):
What goods?! MONEY!!! We need to fill out the paper work to receive funds from the school to help the financial burden of going to this meeting. There are five essays involved, and it would be nice to have five writers and five editors in order to streamline things. I am not an officer, but I’d bet they might agree that this would be an IMPORTANT place to make a presence if you are interested in going to New Orleans. While there on Friday, I believe, we are going to also attempt to:
1. Save hotel rooms in New Orleans.
2. Salvage any possible work ideas at Chemvention inorder to present one as a demo in New
Orleans.
3. Talk about the poster project for New Orleans.
4. Do a brief presentation on the web site in an attempt to try and get members to
understand how to use it, as to allow us to have a single location to communicate, store,
and organize our information. We will also be giving user names and passwords for those
of you who wish to participate, and we can reissue forgotten ones for those of you who have
done such. (you know who you are!)
Opinions:
Some of you might be asking, “why do I care about a National ACS meeting? Poster? Demo projects? Sounds like extra work for no grade!” I’ve done my own questioning, and the results are that there are representatives and students from practically every major school affiliated with ACS, so there ARE a lot of palms to grease and people to meet, and if you’re interested in going to a graduate program this would be a great opportunity to talk to a lot of representatives all in one place. Van, last years Secretary to the Chem Club, has filed information regarding this event that might help us accomplish our goals easier. He also added that this is a more than worth wild event to attend to, and continued by expressing that the post event especially was good practice in skills that are not often required of you by being a student. Van mentioned that many graduate students are showing off there work via a poster, and that these posters are often studies, cases, findings of things yet to be published in a peer review journal, so they are cutting edge. Wouldn’t it be nice to get your fingers wet before the big game, and experience some of these skills?
A note to the Officers: Happy crammings,
Most importantly itt would be nice to scrounge up some green backs to buy some pizzas (

Chemvention
This is a great opportunity for us to get involved at the 2008 ACS National Meeting in New Orleans. Plus, winners get funds to show case there idea. I think James has offered a great idea, and I for one am looking forward to being part of a team that develops this task, and show case it in NEW ORLEANS. This will be a awesome time, and look great on a resume for grad schools in case anybody needs any extra motivation. Being that the DEADLINE is 11/16/07 I suggest we decide if there are other ideas, or if this is the one we like by this weekend.
Contest entries are due to the ACS Office of Community Activities on Friday, November 16.
Challenge: The theme for NCW 2008 is ³Having a Ball with Chemistry²
(chemistry and sports). Affiliates will develop a hands-on activity for
elementary school children that depicts how/where chemistry is connected to
sports materials (shoes, equipment, clothing, etc.) and/or performance
(metabolism, nutrition, physiological)
Rules and guidelines can be found at www.acs.org/ncw
If there are any questions about Chemvention or NCW, please contact Judith
