February 08th, 2010 | Category: Announcements, General, Projects, To Subscribers

Hello fans & members,

Some of you may know that the Chemistry Club has been attempting to show a documentary film at the Tivoli, where we will be highlighting the involved chemistry. After many months of hoop jumping, we have been awarded full sponsorship through the Student Activities department on campus!!! This means We WILL be showing the film precluded, or followed by some presentations, Monday March 1st in the Tivoli between 12 & 3 pm. We will need all types of volunteers to make this a successful venture. If you have interest in the film, or participating for the event, please let me know, and the sooner the better. To those of you who’ve helped us get this far, Thank You. We look forward to this event, and hope all you do as well!!

Thank you,

Eckhard Koehler

Metro Students: An important vote is coming!

Folks,
As you may or may not be aware, part of the Auraria Campus Master Plan includes the centralization of the three schools (Metro, CCD, CUD) into neighborhoods.  Metro’s neighborhood is the parking lot next to the Tivoli (north of the old parking garage).  The first building is in the design process and is expected to cost around $52 million, with approximately $10 million in back-fill renovation of vacated space.  The first building is being designed as a “one stop shop” for student needs, housing nearly all student support services plus administration, the First Year Success program, classrooms, lounges (which will be designed with student input), etc.

Please visit the Metro State is Rising website at http://MetroStateRising.com for more information.  There are links for the Fact Sheet and Neighborhood Master Plan on the right side of the screen.

MOST IMPORTANTLY:  This first building will be payed for with an increase of student fees.  This increase can only be passed by student vote.  Please visit the website and vote in favor of the building.  There is a very informative FAQ page, and it highlights the fact that even after the proposed fee increase, Metro is still the best deal in the state!

The SGA elections happen on April 13-17, and students will receive an email to their mscd.edu account asking for their vote on this issue.  Please look for this email!

I’d be happy to answer any questions,
Dr. Ball

Chemvention is a team competition in which ACS Student Affiliates chapters compete to develop a hands-on activity geared for elementary school children for National Chemistry Week. The Grand Prize winning chapter will receive $2500 to go towards travel to a 2009 ACS National Meeting and four finalists will receive $1000 for travel to a national meeting. Winners will be announced by December 31, 2008.

Challenge: The theme for NCW 2009 is “Celebrating Chemistry—It’s Elemental” (chemistry of the elements). SAACS are being asked to develop a hands-on activity for elementary school children that showcase a “well-known” element or elements in the periodic table.

Top 5 Reasons to Dislike Pre-Med Students

April 21st, 2008 | Category: General

Some of my friends have heard of my battles with wishing to continue in the seemingly endless struggle to get into Medical school. While, many who have gotten in say this is the hardest part, Wired Magazine has recently published a snip it in the level of devotion such students may unfortunately take in order to achieve. I thought it was funny, so I’m sharing. You can visit the link at

Upset your Prof’s didn’t leave you with enough studies to keep you busy this week? Well, here’s you chemistry answer! Good luck :D

Chemoku #18

Instructions:

The following nine chemical elements appear nine times each in the grid above:

Br C Cl F I N O S Se

Hint: the center row has the top nine elements by electronegativity, in order by electronegativity. (We’ve tried to arrange the grid so you CANNOT solve it without figuring out that order!)
