Chemvention is a team competition in which ACS Student Affiliates chapters compete to develop a hands-on activity geared for elementary school children for National Chemistry Week. The Grand Prize winning chapter will receive $2500 to go towards travel to a 2009 ACS National Meeting and four finalists will receive $1000 for travel to a national meeting. Winners will be announced by December 31, 2008.

Challenge: The theme for NCW 2009 is “Celebrating Chemistry—It’s Elemental” (chemistry of the elements). SAACS are being asked to develop a hands-on activity for elementary school children that showcase a “well-known” element or elements in the periodic table.

The deadline to register to compete in the 2008 Chemvention Competition has been extended to Monday, October 5. Please send an email to oca@acs.org of your intentions to participate in the competition. Rules and guidelines can be found at www.acs.org/ncw. Contest entries are due to the ACS Office of Community Activities on Friday, November 16.

It is about time for the Dazzling Demos by the world class experts Marv Lang and Don Showalter.  They will be coming to Metropolitan State College for their presentation entitled “Boiling Cold…Freezing Hot” on Sept. 26.  There will be a social time at 5:00 PM and dinner at 6:00 PM in the Tivoli, Room 440.  Our dinner will be a buffet with chicken parmesan and stuffed shells.
