James King running for President
My name is James King.
I am running for president of the Chemistry Club. I originally wanted to run for King or Emperor, but neither was available.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am applying to the MD/PhD Program at CU later this year. I am a chemistry major here at Metro. I love all things chemistry, and their immediate practical application to the world around us.
I have taken this year off from all work in order to complete my degree, and will have a lot of time to devote to the chemistry club. I have run more than one highly successful business for many years, and can bring this experience to the chemistry club.
I think that the chemistry club can bring a lot of valuable information to its members. And, much of its ability to do so, is as of yet, untapped. I believe that there are many of us out there that would love to have someone from a medical school admissions committee come in and give a talk about getting into med school. Or what about research opportunities in graduate school? Perhaps some of you want to get into Dental school or Pharmacy school. I think that we as a club have the ability to get people in who have been there, to talk to us about these things. And not just faculty. Maybe we could bring in a med student, and get the inside story.
Of course there are some of you who don’t have Grad school ambitions, but just love chemistry. We are here for you too. We have the ability to set up field trips to various chemical laboratories, to SEE chemistry in real life. Last fall we went and visited the analytical lab at New Belgium Brewery. (plus we got to drink free beer). From what I have seen the chem club has only just begun to realize the opportunities available to us as members.
Today at the meeting it was brought up by Eckhard, that we may be able to get an upcoming tour at the US National Ice Core Laboratory. These guys have ice core samples from Antarctica. How cool would that be.
My goal would be to help us get as many of these events as I can. From tours of chemical labs to guest speakers. Chemistry develops a whole new feel and really comes alive when we can see it and experience it in real world applications. This is after all, the reason so many of you are chemistry majors. Right?
The primary functions of the chemistry club are two-fold as I see it:
First, is to help keep the future of chemistry strong. And, we will do so through various community events. The second, is to help you get the most amount of fun out of your chemical education. I will help the chemistry club to direct activities that will be nothing less than a fascinating side to the chemistry that all of us are dying to see!
Sincerely,
Presidential Hopeful
James King
No commentsIdeal meeting times for all Chem Club Members
Hello Chem Club Members,
Dr. Ball will be posting a sheet on his office door for people to stop by and indicate their preferred meeting times for the club.
Here is how it will work; All Chem club members should stop by and indicate the times that they CANNOT attend meetings by blocking out the given times that they are not available for such meetings. When all have done so, there is hope that there will be some empty time slots during the week.
These time slots will be the ones that are chosen to be the club meeting times. We are shooting for an afternoon slot, and a morning slot.
We are also shooting for meetings to occur like this: Two meetings in a week, (one morning, and one afternoon). And, for there to be Two monthly meeting cycles. So, approximately every other week we can meet, and twice in that weekly cycle.
We feel this would give the vast majority of members the opportunity to attend. Your attendance is encouraged, as we have a lot planned for this upcoming year. And everyone’s ideas are valued. The meetings will always be posted here, under the calendar of events. This way you can see well in advance of when they are.
So, please, everyone who can, make an effort to stop by this week and cross off the times when you aren’t available, so that we can begin with the schedule.
Thanks,
James King
