Tour of the Labs at the National Ice Core Laboratory!

February 25th, 2008 | Category: Announcements, To Subscribers

Hello Everyone

I have managed to schedule a Tour of the Labs at the National Ice Core Laboratory! (ok, not my original idea, but cool just the same) (no, literally very cool). The laboratory manager, Todd Hinkley will arrange a customized tour for our knowledge level.  We will learn of the chemistry that is applied to the ice cores from around the world, (including Antarctica) that helps understand about earth’s environment in the past. Part of this tour is in warm areas, and part of it in sub zero temperatures.  You must bring cold weather gear etc…  Friday March 14th 11:00 AM, is the scheduled tour time.  We will plan to depart from Metro at 10:00 AM, so that we may carpool.  It is at the Federal Center.  PLEASE rsvp with me at jkingiv@comcast.net  asap. He really needs to know how many people are attending to arrange for it with the lab.

Check out their website:  http://nicl.usgs.gov/prewho.htm

Thanks,

James King

p.s.  Keep a lookout at the Events section of the website, we’ve got LOTS of cool tours coming up!

Reminder: March 6 Local Section Meeting

February 25th, 2008 | Category: Forgotten

Folks,

If you haven’t already seen it, check out the Events announcement for March 6.  This should be a very interesting presentation (at DU), and getting your faces in front of the local section means you represent yourselves (rather than Dr. Schelble and Yours Truly representing you) to the folks that make decisions to support student affiliates.  You might meet a future employer or grad school advisor, and dinner is only $5 for students.  Social hour (with wine and cheese) is 5pm, dinner is 6pm, talk is 7pm (and usually goes until 8pm).  Check out the newsletter hanging on the Club’s bulletin board for all the details.

RSVP deadline is Feb 28 (this Thursday) to Jessi Snyder (jsnyder6@du.edu) — let Jessi know you’re a Metro student.  Let’s be seen as the most active Chem Club in Colorado!

Local ACS Meeting

February 22nd, 2008 | Category: Events
March 6, 2008
5:00 pmto8:00 pm

March 6 (Thursday) is the next local ACS meeting at DU. The topic is the utilization of advanced spectroscopic methods in science education. The local section will be supporting student affiliate groups again this year with another COSAC conference, and they support student travel to conferences, as well. I encourage you all to attend these local meetings for several reasons: you’ll hear about current applications and news, get new ideas, get (or stay) excited about chemistry, meet potential employers, and be seen as a highly active student affiliate group. Not to mention, students get a good meal for $5.

I’ve attached the section newsletter, and I always post the current copy on the Club bulletin board outside SI323. RSVP’s are due by Feb 28.

What would you like?

February 15th, 2008 | Category: Announcements

Hello Everyone,

The elections are over, I guess that means I am the president.  It was a tough race, and the mudslinging got bad, but we made it through. And congratulations Jonathan.

For our first order of business, I wanted to send out an inquiry.  Who would you like to see?

Would you like to see a medical school representative?  A dental school rep? A Pharm school rep?  If everyone who is interested will shoot me an e-mail directly at jkingiv@comcast.net then I will get to work immediately on it.  Also let me know what evening is best.  Obviously if we only get one request for dental school for example, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to ask a representative to come.  I am also going to contact the Biology Club, and see if there is any interest there.  The more people we get the better.  And if any of you are members of the Bio Club, you too can pass the word along to them.  This may be your future, so speak up and let me know.  And if there is anything else specific that any of you would like to see also, please let me know.

Next on the agenda is our meeting schedule.  If you haven’t gotten by Dr Ball’s office and crossed off your available times please do so quickly.  As for meeting attendance, all members are encouraged to attend as often as you can.  Sometime next week our meetings will be posted.

Thanks again,

James King

Voting is Open…

February 14th, 2008 | Category: Announcements, To Subscribers

Club members,

Please cast your votes today and tomorrow for club officers.  If you do not require anonymity, simply email your vote to me at eball2@mscd.edu (save a copy in your sent box for proof — you never know when hanging chads might rear their ugly heads!).  If you do require anonymity, please write your vote on a piece of paper and drop it into the ballot box which will be at Mary Kay’s desk in SI 323.  When you vote, please sign the voter’s log so we can be sure nobody votes “Chicago style” (early and often).

The only contested position is for VP, between Patricia Witte and Jonathan Miorelli.  The rest of the slate of officers is in the previous announcement.  If you do not cast a vote you are assumed to agree with the uncontested positions, and abstain from voting on the VP position.

I have received this bio from Jonathan:

“Hey, I am Jonathan Miorelli and I am running for the position of Vice President.

Now, I know that most of you already know me but just be sure I will introduce myself. I am a chemistry major, physics minor who has been an active part of the chemistry for almost a year now. I am also the lead chemistry tutor at the MSCD Tutoring Center. Here are the reasons why I think I would make a good VP:

  • I work on campus
  • I am able to make most if not all meetings and am usually easy to get a hold of, if need be.
  • Devotion to shorter emails (after this one).

Recruiting-

  • In the Tutoring Center, I was able to make chemistry the #2 (previously #6) tutored subject (second only to math). Surpassing much larger departments such as biology, psychology, and business.
  • I can help increase chemistry club membership/involvement
  • I have a deck of cards with scientists on them.

Devotion to chemical instruction-

  • I am a trained and certified CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) tutor, which means that have experience helping people understand chemistry
  • I have represented Metro at CRLA functions, including last year’s national meeting in Portland. I am currently trying to prepare a presentation for this year’s conference.
  • Several times a year I go to various High School science classes and give a lecture on how nuclear technology works and how nuclear issues affect our lives (with several engaging demonstrations).
  • I can cut a deck of cards with one hand (see bullet #4).

Ok, I hope that’s enough to go on. Hope it wasn’t too long. “

Ideal Time for Club Meetings

February 13th, 2008 | Category: To Subscribers

Club Members,

The calendars are on my door.  There’s one for the mornings, and one for the afternoons.  Please cross out any time that does not fit your schedule.  If a time is crossed out already, please add another little “x” so the Club can find a “best” time if there’s no perfect time.

James King running for President

February 12th, 2008 | Category: Announcements

Hello Everyone!

My name is James King.

I am running for president of the Chemistry Club.  I originally wanted to run for King or Emperor, but neither was available.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am applying to the MD/PhD Program at CU later this year. I am a chemistry major here at Metro. I love all things chemistry, and their immediate practical application to the world around us.

I have taken this year off from all work in order to complete my degree, and will have a lot of time to devote to the chemistry club.  I have run more than one highly successful business for many years, and can bring this experience to the chemistry club.

I think that the chemistry club can bring a lot of valuable information to its members. And, much of its ability to do so, is as of yet, untapped.  I believe that there are many of us out there that would love to have someone from a medical school admissions committee come in and give a talk about getting into med school.  Or what about research opportunities in graduate school?  Perhaps some of you want to get into Dental school or Pharmacy school. I think that we as a club have the ability to get people in who have been there, to talk to us about these things.  And not just faculty.  Maybe we could bring in a med student, and get the inside story.

Of course there are some of you who don’t have Grad school ambitions, but just love chemistry.  We are here for you too.  We have the ability to set up field trips to various chemical laboratories, to SEE chemistry in real life. Last fall we went and visited the analytical lab at New Belgium Brewery. (plus we got to drink free beer).  From what I have seen the chem club has only just begun to realize the opportunities available to us as members.

Today at the meeting it was brought up by Eckhard, that we may be able to get an upcoming tour at the US National Ice Core Laboratory. These guys have ice core samples from Antarctica. How cool would that be.

My goal would be to help us get as many of these events as I can. From tours of chemical labs to guest speakers.  Chemistry develops a whole new feel and really comes alive when we can see it and experience it in real world applications. This is after all, the reason so many of you are chemistry majors. Right?

The primary functions of the chemistry club are two-fold as I see it:

First, is to help keep the future of chemistry strong.  And, we will do so through various community events.  The second, is to help you get the most amount of fun out of your chemical education.  I will help the chemistry club to direct activities that will be nothing less than a fascinating side to the chemistry that all of us are dying to see!

Sincerely,

Presidential Hopeful

James King
